    Bishop-Phelps-Bolloba's theorem on bounded closed convex sets

    This paper deals with the \emph{Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'as property} (\emph{BPBp} for short) on bounded closed convex subsets of a Banach space XX, not just on its closed unit ball BXB_X. We firstly prove that the \emph{BPBp} holds for bounded linear functionals on arbitrary bounded closed convex subsets of a real Banach space. We show that for all finite dimensional Banach spaces XX and YY the pair (X,Y)(X,Y) has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed convex subset DD of XX, and also that for a Banach space YY with property (β)(\beta) the pair (X,Y)(X,Y) has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed absolutely convex subset DD of an arbitrary Banach space XX. For a bounded closed absorbing convex subset DD of XX with positive modulus convexity we get that the pair (X,Y)(X,Y) has the \emph{BPBp} on DD for every Banach space YY. We further obtain that for an Asplund space XX and for a locally compact Hausdorff LL, the pair (X,C0(L))(X, C_0(L)) has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed absolutely convex subset DD of XX. Finally we study the stability of the \emph{BPBp} on a bounded closed convex set for the 1\ell_1-sum or \ell_{\infty}-sum of a family of Banach spaces

    Department of Biomedical EngineeringHuman genomes are routinely compared against a universal human reference. However, this strategy could miss population-specific and personal genomic variations, which may be detected more efficiently using an ethnically-relevant or personal reference. Here I describe principles and methods in constructing a hybrid assembly of the first Korean reference genome (KOREF) by compiling all the major contemporary sequencing and mapping technologies: short and long paired-end sequences, synthetic and single molecule long reads, and optical and nanochannel genome maps. This low-cost hybrid approach shows the feasibility of routine reference-quality de novo assembled genomes to precisely analyze many personal and ethnic genomes in the future. I also introduce the concept of the consensus variome reference, providing information on millions of variants incorporated directly from 40 additional ethnically homogeneous genomes from the Korean Personal Genome Project. KOREF is the first de novo assembled consensus variome reference. KOREF has been constructed according to standardized production and evaluation procedures, and registered as a standard reference data for ethnic Korean genomes by evaluating its traceability, uncertainty, and consistency. By comparing KOREF against other ethnic references, I find that the ethnically-relevant consensus reference can be beneficial for efficient variants detection and possibly other purposes in the future. Therefore, I propose that, despite the limited level of divergence within our species, the level of genomic scale variation is sufficiently high to warrant the use of ethnically-relevant references for large-scale personal and disease genome projects. Systematic comparison of human assemblies also shows the importance of assembly quality, suggesting the necessity of new technologies to comprehensively map ethnic and personal genomic structure variations.     The Effect of Neuromuscular Blockade Reversal Agents on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications in Patients undergoing Femur Fracture Repair Surgery: A Retrospective Observational Study

    Background Femoral fracture repair surgery under general anesthesia is associated with postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). However, information on PPCs caused by residual neuromuscular blockade following perioperative use of neuromuscular blockers is limited. This study aimed to identify the differences in the incidence of PPCs according to the type of neuromuscular blockade reversal agent used in femoral fracture repair surgery, as well as the risk factors for PPCs. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of 604 patients aged >18 years who underwent general anesthesia for femoral fracture repair surgery at a single university hospital between March 2017 and March 2022. Patients in whom sugammadex or anticholinesterase was used to reverse the neuromuscular block were subjected to propensity score matching. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for PPCs. Results Among the 604 patients, 108 were matched in each group. The incidence rates of PPCs overall and in the anticholinesterase and sugammadex groups were 7.0%, 8.3%, and 5.6%, respectively, with no significant differences between the groups. Older age, higher ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) physical status, and lower preoperative oxygen saturation were risk factors, whereas emergency surgery was a preventive factor. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that the incidence of PPC did not differ significantly between sugammadex and anticholinesterase in patients undergoing femur fracture repair under general anesthesia.     Perspectives Provided by Leopard and Other Cat Genomes: How Diet Determined the Evolutionary History of Carnivores, Omnivores, and Herbivores

    Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies have enabled humans to generate and investigate the genomes of wild species. This includes the big cat family, such as tigers, lions, and leopards. Adding the first high quality leopard genome, we have performed an in-depth comparative analysis to identify the genomic signatures in the evolution of felid to become the top predators on land. Our study focused on how the carnivore genomes, as compared to the omnivore or herbivore genomes, shared evolutionary adaptations in genes associated with nutrient metabolism, muscle strength, agility, and other traits responsible for hunting and meat digestion. We found genetic evidence that genomes represent what animals eat through modifying genes. Highly conserved genetically relevant regions were discovered in genomes at the family level. Also, the Felidae family genomes exhibited low levels of genetic diversity associated with decreased population sizes, presumably because of their strict diet, suggesting their vulnerability and critical conservation status. Our findings can be used for human health enhancement, since we share the same genes as cats with some variation. This is an example how wildlife genomes can be a critical resource for human evolution, providing key genetic marker information for disease treatment

    The Analysis of Antecedents for the Video Telephony Service Adoption: From the Value-Based Perspective

    Korean Telecommunications Industry has a large scale market and boasts on high service quality and high technologies enough to provide the Video Telephony Service (VTS) satisfactorily. For many years, Korean telephone companies have been investing enormous sums to advertise their services widely and to allow their customers to change their cell phones for the third-generation (3G) devices indispensable for the service. However, despite their efforts, the VTS adoption rate in Korea is very low and it seems that customers seldom feel the necessity to use. From this viewpoint, it becomes necessary to find the antecedents influencing the intention to use for the VTS empirically. For this purpose, we proposed several hypotheses from the perspective of the Value-based Adoption Model (VAM). VAM is a conceptual model suggested to overcome some limitations of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in explaining the adoption of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) such as Mobile Internet where customers play the role of service consumer rather than simply technology users. We conducted a survey on 125 samples and found that customers perceive the value of VTS when they can recognize the service is functionally useful (Perceived Usefulness) and when they feel they can put themselves forward by using it (Self-Expression). On the other hand, the other factors including Technical Complexity, Privacy Concern and Perceived Price (Fee) don’t have statistically significant influences on the Perceived Value of VTS
